iPod touch Updated But No Camera
Apple today introduced an update to the iPod touch line. The entire iPod touch line received price cuts with the entry level 8GB iPod touch priced at just $199. The company also introduced 32GB and 64GB models that Apple promises will offer up to 50 percent faster performance and support for better graphics with Open GL ES 2.0.

Although widely rumored, none of the iPod touch line features a camera. Even more surprising when the entry level iPod nano can now shoot video and it’s priced under $150. The same rumor sites that predicted a camera in the iPod touch did correctly predict that Apple would not include the camera due to manufacturing difficulties. Steve Jobs, back in action today, was asked NY Times why Apple chose not to include a camcorder in the iPod touch, but offer one in the iPod nano.
Originally, we weren’t exactly sure how to market the Touch. Was it an iPhone without the phone? Was it a pocket computer? What happened was, what customers told us was, they started to see it as a game machine. Because a lot of the games were free on the store. Customers started to tell us, “You don’t know what you’ve got here — it’s a great game machine, with the multitouch screen, the accelerometer, and so on.”
Don’t be surprised if we see a camera find it’s way into the next iPod touch. After all, it’s a sibling of the iPhone and seems like a logical value add to the iPod touch line. Full press release available after the break.
