While “the boring stuff,” — permitting and siting solar plants and transmission lines — might cause the biggest hurdles for Oakland, Calif.-based solar thermal startup BrightSource, the company doesn’t seem to have any trouble bringing in big backers. According to the New York Times, BrightSource will announce on Wednesday that the finance arm of construction giant Bechtel has taken an equity stake in the company’s first group of solar thermal plants called the Ivanpah Solar Electric Generating System. Bechtel will provide the construction and engineering for the solar projects, which will sell solar power to California utilities Pacific Gas & Electric and Southern California Edison. Read more...

A federal appeals court yesterday provided much-needed succor to Microsoft in its high-stakes legal duel with Canadian firm i4i. The latest judgement temporarily suspends the permanent injunction on the sale of Microsoft Word in its current patent-violating avatar. Microsoft’s Canadian adversary was granted the injunction last month by U.S. District Court Judge Leonard Davis. The Judge had found Word’s default file format, Office Open XML, to be in violation of i4i’s US patent number 5787449.

Throughout the next seven weeks, @mswindows will be giving away various types of prizes somehow based on the number seven (seven pizzas, seven pounds of candy, and so on).
